When Troy Herbst and Larry Roeseler scored an overall win in the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 last November, driving the Terrible Herbst Motorsports Class One Unlimited "truggy" (a truck/buggy hybrid), it was a first-in-a-lifetime experience for both of them. Roeseler had won the 1000 an amazing 10 times on a motorcycle, but never on four wheels. And teammate Herbst had scored many SCORE victories, including class wins in the 1000. But never an overall win.

This year, they drove the Herbst truggy to the overall win — giving BFGoodrich® tires their unprecedented 19th consecutive SCORE Baja 1000 victory. In all, 18 of the top 20 finishers were on BFGoodrich tires.

"It was a dream come true for me," says Herbst. "I've scored class wins before, and been second overall. But without this one it would have been like a quarterback in the NFL who never makes it to the Super Bowl. And to win overall is pretty incredible."

Roeseler felt the same way. After his tremendous 10 wins on a motorcycle, he put in years trying to win the race on four wheels without success — until this year.

"For it to finally happen was as exciting as the first time I won on a bike. The thrill was like the first time all over again," Roeseler said.

Both drivers had high praise for the 39-inch BFGoodrich race tires on their winning Unlimited "truggy."

"The tires were incredible," Herbst said. "To run through the gravel, the mud and on the pavement as hard as we did, and not have problems, was amazing. They were so good we didn't even change our tires until the 300-mile mark in the race. Usually, we'd change every 100 or 150 miles. But this year, after the testing we'd done on the new 39s, and the confidence we had, we went all the way to the 300-mile mark before we changed. And they looked great when we pulled 'em off."

"The tires looked so good when Troy came in," Roeseler says, "that I'm convinced we could have left them on and kept going. The tread and everything else was in great shape."

Roeseler said the 39-inch tires made the driving much easier. "The average person cannot understand the severity of the terrain and how big and jagged the rocks are. But the tires are so strong that I didn't even have to think about them while I was driving. Not even in the back of my head. I just concentrate on keeping the car on course and not worry about making mistakes."

The Baja 1000 victory is more proof that BFGoodrich tires are The World's Toughest Off-Road Tires™. From 1/1/04 through 12/31/04, BFGoodrich tires won 240 of 310 major off-road competitions.
