Change the look of your pickup with new 20" All-Terrain T/A®KO tiresJune 15, 2004 Until now, anyone who wanted to fit big 20-inch wheels to their pickup or SUV was pretty much limited to low-profile on-road performance tires. Now, with the introduction of the LT285/55R20 BFGoodrich® All-Terrain T/A®KO tire, you can get the popular big-wheel look without sacrificing off-road capability. The off-road performance of the new 20-inch tire is similar to that of other All-Terrain T/AKO tire sizes, says BFGoodrich Brand Category Manager for light truck tires Gary Enterline, except in aired-down situations. And on-pavement handling and response is actually improved, thanks to the 20-inch tire's lower profile*. "If you stick to the (recommended) tire pressures when you go to the 20-inch tire," Enterline says, "the off-road traction and stability will be about the same as it was with the smaller tire. But if you 'air down,' or bleed air out of the tire to widen the footprint, which some people do to improve traction in extreme situations, the tire will not have the same deflective capacity, due to a lower profile and sidewall height."
Will the new LT285/55R20 fit your truck? It's a direct replacement, with no suspension modifications, for vehicles that take an LT285/75R16 tire, one of the most popular light truck sizes. And an easy upgrade for many other applications. It also fits the Dodge Ram 1500, which comes on 20-inch tires. Check with your BFGoodrich® Tires retailer to be sure."A lot of our customers wanted to combine the look and performance of an All-Terrain T/AKO tire, with the hot style of big 20-inch wheels," says Enterline. "Now they can. And the response has been incredible." *NOTE: When changing your tires or wheels, you want to maintain the same overall tire/wheel diameter to ensure the same gearing and accurate speedometer readings. Large changes in diameter of the tire/wheel assemblies also can alter the effectiveness of certain anti-lock braking systems (ABS). Make sure the tire/wheel combination fits without any clearance problems. Check for clearance between the wheel, brake and suspension components as well as the tire and wheel well areas. Clearances also need to be checked during hard cornering and tight turning. You also must confirm that the replacement tire and/or wheel has the proper load capacity for your vehicle.
