Champion Drifts From Track To Silver Screen And Back Again October 24, 2006
He's one of the hottest drivers in one of the fastest growing motor sports, but Samuel Hübinette-A.K.A. the "Crazy Swede"-says he wouldn't be at the top of his game without his BFGoodrich® g-Force T/A® KDW tires. These days the name of the game for Hübinette, who came to the U.S. from Sweden in 1992, is drifting, a form of auto ballet that utilizes speed, artistic driving and tires so hot they smoke. His success, he says, has a lot to do with his BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDW tires that help provide just the right blend of traction and response to heat. "BFGoodrich tires have been a big factor in my success," says Hübinette. "I get great performance out of my BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDW tires. In drifting, your tires can get to 300 degrees. They are boiling. And my BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDW tires have a great response and hold up under those conditions." Hübinette, who originally came to the U.S. as a race instructor, found that after years of driving, he was a natural at the newly emerging sport. So far this season he is the top- ranked Formula Drift driver- a continuation of his success as 2004 Formula Drift Champion. Drifting officially pushed through to the mainstream with the June release of "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift". Though most people won't recognize him in the movie, Hübinette spent several months working as a stunt driver for many of the high powered drifting scenes. For Hübinette, the film was a great experience, even if few fans will know that he was behind the wheel for many of the most extreme driving stunts. "I'm a blond Swedish guy, but in the movie I'm a long haired Japanese guy," he says, noting that he was the stunt driver for the "Han" character who spends much of the movie behind the wheel of a Mazda Rx7. The Formula Drift Championship Series wraps up at the Irwindale Speedway in October.
