Revealed: Paul Walker's Skyline GT-R
September 30, 2002

When Paul Walker, star of the hit movie "The Fast and the Furious," wanted a hot tuner version of the Nissan Skyline GT-R, he turned to MotoRex, a leading Southern California importer of the Japanese cult car. MotoRex, is located in the Los Angeles suburb of Gardena, a traditional home to hot-rodding and street-racing enterprises.

What did MotoRex chief Hiro Nonashima want to build for Walker, as an example of the ultimate, way-cool Skyline GT-R?

"We didn't want to give him any gimmicks," says Hiro. "We were really selective in the parts we recommended." That meant avoiding any of the cheap body kits on the market and choosing one from Nismo, which builds racing bodies for Nissan.

"Every body part we used -- front bumper, rear bumper and side skirts -- is from Nismo, and all the parts are race-bred."

In other words, pure, real performance. Go, more than show. The philosophy applied to the motor mods as well.

"We didn't do any crazy internal work on the engine," Hiro says. "Just simple bolt-on parts: intake, exhaust and boost control. The intake and exhaust are by GReddy, and they're basically stock, except that we removed the black-box induction system and replaced it with an open one. The GReddy exhaust pipes are a fatter 3.5-inch diameter, up from the stock 2.5-inch pipe."

For tires and wheels, Hiro chose Volk Racing TE37s wearing BFGoodrich® g-Force T/A® 265/35x18s. Why BFG rubber?

Hiro goes back to the theme of the Paul Walker Skyline GT-R being a "no gimmick, real deal" vehicle.

"Paul Walker's car is basically a showcase car," Hiro says, "and we used the best parts possible out there in the market. That's why people can look up to his vehicle."

How much would it set you back to set up your own Paul Walker GT-R? Hiro pegs the engine work and the bolt-on parts required for a 400 HP punch at $4000. The body kit from Nismo adds up to about a $4000 package, and the Volk Racing wheels retail at $900 per.

What you get is much more than the sum of the dollars, in Hiro's view.

"The performance of the Skyline GT-R surpasses most of the cars out there. And with just this simple bolt-on stuff, you have a car that will eat up Ferraris and Porsche 911 Turbos.

"It's a cult performance vehicle," Hiro says. "If you know about the car, you're gonna go nuts over it. If you don't know, you might not notice."

But stay tuned. Paul Walker's MotoRex Skyline GT-R is a work in progress. "We're in the process of doing more to it, to make it even more impressive."
