Enough traction for a world-famous racing school
December 20, 2004

The race cars used to train drivers at the world-famous Skip Barber Racing School run on BFGoodrich® Traction T/A® street tires. That's right: even though the sleek, single-seat Formula Dodge racecars are single-purpose racers for track driving only, they run on the same Traction T/A® tires you can buy for your sports coupe, sedan or mini-SUV.

Surprised? Rick Roso, motorsports marketing manager, explains: "BFGoodrich street tires feel great on the track. We like driving the Formula Dodge race cars on the BFGoodrich street tires because they not only have superb traction, but they're communicative. They communicate in clear terms to the driver what's happening. That makes it more enjoyable for the student and helps the instructors with their jobs."

There is one notch higher than Formula Dodge in the Skip Barber Racing School programs, and that is the Barber R/T 2000 race car series — a single-seat racecar with sequential gearbox and composite body. On dry pavement, the Barber R/T 2000 race cars run on BFGoodrich® racing slicks. But the rain tire for the R/T 2000 cars is the Traction T/A tire. Why? Because it functions superbly on the track both in the wet and dry.

"It has really good grip in the rain," Roso says. "How a tire evacuates the water is important. It's not a given that every good dry street tire is a good rain tire. But the Traction T/A is really good in the wet."

Roso says driving in the wet is important to learn to race. "You learn a lot more if you're willing to drive in the wet," Roso says. "And having a tire that's good in the wet, at school races or events, is not a minor attribute."
