January 7, 2004 BFGoodrich® Tires To Become Official Tire of ASA Late Model Series Greenville, NC BFGoodrich® Tires has signed an agreement to become the official tire of The American Speed Association's (ASA) Late Model Series. BFGoodrich Tires will provide its Traction T/A® racing tire, the first time that a radial tire has been used in Late Model Series competition. BFGoodrich Tires began its relationship with ASA in 2000, introducing the Traction T/A radial racing tire, converting the series from traditional bias-ply tires to the newer, more advanced radial technology. The addition of the Late Model Series expands the relationship between BFGoodrich Tires and ASA and builds on the success of the performance of the brand's radial tires in the national series. "This agreement only furthers our relationship with BFGoodrich Tires and at the same time elevates the ASA Late Model Series," said Steve Dale, ASA president/CEO. "It will give the Late Model Series competitors the opportunity to learn about radial tires and enhance their careers in the sport." "Our relationship with ASA has been beneficial to our overall motorsports program and we are excited to expand our partnership with the Late Model Series," said Todd Steen, motorsports marketing manager for BFGoodrich Tires. "The ASA Late Model Series will not only enhance the brand's visibility, but will give yet another set of competitors experience on radial tires." The new BFGoodrich radial tires will provide teams and drivers with improved wear and very stable performance during long green-flag runs. Up to two left-side tread compounds and up to three right-side tread compounds will be offered as a function of the types of tracks visited during the racing season. Since the ASA National Tour made the switch to the radial tires, teams have run nearly 850,000 laps, translating into more than 457,000 miles on BFGoodrich Traction T/A tires in official competition, not including preseason or in-season testing. These numbers were compiled from the 77 race weekends held during the past four seasons of competition. In 2004, ASA Late Model Series competitors can change only two BFGoodrich tires per event. For example, after purchasing four tires at a first event, in succeeding events, only two tires can be purchased. This measured use of tires is possible because of the improved product durability of the Traction T/A tire, allowing a lower the cost of racing in the series. The ASA Late Model Series will use 10-inch BFGoodrich Traction T/A tires, one inch narrower than the current ASA National Tour tires. The entire 2004 ASA Late Model Series schedule continues to be formulated with a total of 14 events expected to make up the final slate. Officials are planning for 100-lap green-flag races with a preference to not have competitors changing tires, adding fuel or needing pit stops during the events. The cars will include makes from three major manufacturers — General Motors, Ford and Dodge. They will utilize template bodies and engines from all three. The American Speed Association has announced the ASA Late Model Series will begin its 2004 season at the .50-mile Madison International Speedway in Oregon, Wisconsin on Saturday, May 8. Matt Kenseth, the 2003 NASCAR Winston Cup Champion and former ASA competitor, will compete in the season-opening event. The American Speed Association is based in Pendleton, Indiana, and has offered stock car racing programs since 1968, including the ASA National Tour, ASA Late Model Series and ASA Member Track programs.
