January 19, 2004BFGoodrich® Tires Wins 12 Classes At SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge; Commercial T/A® Makes Racing Debut On Limited Buggy Laughlin, NV BFGoodrich® Tires started off the 2004 desert racing season where it left off following its 18th consecutive Baja 1000 win by racing to 12 class victories at the SCORE Laughlin Challenge. With 180 entries from 12 U.S. states including racers traveling from Japan and Mexico, BFGoodrich Tires teams took four out of the top five overall spots with 12 teams finishing first in their respective classes including:
"From start to finish, our tires showed they were up to the challenge," said Todd Steen, motorsports marketing manager for BFGoodrich Tires. "The Baja T/A® tires performed flawlessly and it is always nice to win the first one of the season." A total of 16 different classes for cars and trucks ran two to four laps of the 11-mile loop course each of the two race days. In total, seven elapsed time races were run each day with competitors starting side-by-side every 30 seconds.
For the first time in SCORE competition, Rob MacCachren raced to victory with BFGoodrich Commercial T/A tires aboard his 1-2/1600 class buggy. MacCachren's victory in the 1-2/1600 class was his second victory of MacCachren tested Commercial T/A tires during the 2003 season and decided to race Commercial T/A All-Season tires on the front and Commercial T/A Traction tires on the rear for the first race of the 2004 season. Switching to the new tires increased traction and improved overall steering and control. MacCachren proved that one driver can do it all as he completed one of the most impressive desert racing weekends for one driver in the recent history of the sport. MacCachren, a seven-time SCORE points champion, won two classes and finished second in another.
"This was a career event for me," said MacCachren, who earlier in the week won his division in the Laughlin Leap competition and then set a new record in winning the SCORE Pit Crew Showdown. "What a wonderful start to a new year and a new racing season."During 2003, teams racing on BFGoodrich tires claimed 66 class victories and 13 overall season championships including the brand's 18th consecutive Baja 1000 win. In addition, BFGoodrich Tires finished first overall in each of the series' six races and claimed the overall season points championship. BFGoodrich Tires also claimed two SCORE Off-Roadsman of the Year awards at the series ending awards banquet. BFGoodrich Tires' off-road success began in 1976, with the introduction of the world's first performance light-truck radial, the Radial All-Terrain T/A®. To prove the durability and reliability of radials in off-road conditions, the engineers put the tire to the toughest test they could find: off-road racing. Since then, the BFGoodrich brand has continued the tradition of racing the tires it sells to the public and using motorsports as a breeding ground for future technologies. BFGoodrich Tires is the official tire of the SCORE International desert racing series. |
