February 22, 2002 BFGoodrich® Brand Is Official Tire of ProROCK Series; Offers Contingency Program for 2002 Season Greenville, SC The BFGoodrich® brand will be the official tire for the 2002 ProROCK Series and will post a total of $36,000 in contingency awards for the six-event tour. The brand will also post $17,000 in championship payouts. "BFGoodrich tires have been used in rockcrawling in the past, but this is the first year that the brand has offered a support program," said Frank DeAngelo, manager, BFGoodrich Tires off-road racing. "We are proud to be the official tire of ProROCK. "Rockcrawling is one of the fastest growing off-road sports in the U.S., and we are truly excited to be part of it," DeAngelo said. "I've been involved in off-road racing for more than 20 years and I thought I'd seen it all, but I've never experienced anything like this. My hat's off to the competitors. I still can't believe the extreme moves they make, and the precision that's required." According to DeAngelo, competitors using BFGoodrich T/A tires will be eligible to win $1,500, $1,000 and $500 for first, second or third place finishes, respectively, at each of the six events. Those finishing in the top three in the year-end standings will be eligible to collect $5,000 for first, $2,500 for second and $1,000 for third. Both the contingency and year-end awards are payable in both the Trophy Class and the Modified Stock Class. BFGoodrich Tires will provide tire support at the first two events — the opening round in Johnson Valley, Calif., Feb. 23-25, and the Farmington, N.M., event, April 27-28, where the brand will also be the title sponsor. "We will have tire service professionals on hand to help competitors with their tire needs and to answer any questions," DeAngelo said. The BFGoodrich® Mud-Terrain T/A KM, which was introduced last year, will be the primary tire that competitors will use. It sports construction features and a compound that make it a natural for rockcrawling. In addition, the brand will use its involvement in ProROCK to test prototype versions of the Krawler T/A®, a tire being developed specifically extreme conditions like rockcrawling. "We are in the final development phase for the Krawler T/A," DeAngelo said. "We've given sets to a small group of rockcrawling competitors and enthusiasts, and asked them to test the tires in the most extreme conditions they could find. We will use their feedback as well as information from our own testing to refine performance so that the final production Krawler T/A offers optimal grip and durability in a range of extreme conditions." While the timing for general availability depends on what is learned from the prototype testing, the Krawler T/A® should be available sometime next year. "We believe that testing in actual conditions is the only way to evaluate a tire like this," DeAngelo explained. "Real-world testing is typical for BFGoodrich® Tires. We have a 30-plus-year history of using the knowledge we gain from motorsports and testing in extreme situations to develop the products we offer to enthusiasts." BFGoodrich tires are made for people looking to take control of the driving experience. They combine technological expertise with the knowledge gained in motorsports to offer a traction advantage for almost every type of vehicle and driving preference. |
