September 27, 2003 BFGoodrich® Tires Unleashes Karnivore at Second Annual UROC SuperCrawl Challenge BFGoodrich® Tires today showcased its Karnivore rock-crawling machine-the toughest, most radical rock-crawling vehicle known to off-roaders-at the Second Annual United Rock Crawling & Off-Road Challenge (UROC), in St. George, Utah.
Conceived by John Gilleland, one of the most celebrated competitors in the sport of rock crawling, the Karnivore is outfitted with BFGoodrich® Krawler T/A®KX tires to ensure maximum performance in competition. In 2002, BFGoodrich tires won more major rock-crawling events than all other tires combined.
Rolling over anything in its path on BFGoodrich Krawler T/AKX tires and Sway-A-Way shocks, Karnivore is set on an Avalanche Engineering Zero-G chassis with Dynatrac axles sending power to all four Trail Ready wheels through an Advance Adapter's Atlas transfer case. A Howe Steering setup takes care of precision maneuvering while a Warn winch up front masks a Chevy V-8 powerplant under the hood. "I've run all the other big brands, and BFGoodrich tires are the best," said Gilleland. "Other guys I know who were running on other brands tried BFGoodrich once and then switched over." BFGoodrich Krawler T/AKX tires are designed specifically for off-road use, offering an ultra-aggressive, deep-lug tread pattern and one of the most puncture-resistant sidewalls ever offered. "We worked hard to develop the ultimate rock-crawling tire that would provide drivers with the unique traction capabilities and exceptional durability needed during rock crawling," said Scott Dishman, marketing manager for BFGoodrich light-truck tires. "And by all counts, the Krawler T/AKX delivers on every level." The nearly two-ton Karnivore comes equipped with a 60-40 front-to-rear weight ratio and an aggressive V-8 engine used to power over head-high boulders, climb sideways and navigate near-vertical slopes. The snug cockpit is approximately the size of that of a small airplane. A narrow fuselage affords the machine tremendous ground clearance, while keeping the center of gravity low to improve stability. It also features a rugged chrome moly tube chassis and a four-link suspension, rather than the more prevalent three-link suspension system. UROC features the world's toughest, most dedicated rock crawlers and also offers amateur rock-crawling enthusiasts a chance to come face-to-face with professionals to witness off-roading vehicles being challenged beyond their limits. BFGoodrich® Tires combines technological expertise with vast motorsports experience, delivering a high-performance tire for every type of vehicle from ultra-high performance tuner vehicles, sports cars and SUVs to the hottest sport trucks, pickups and rock-crawling rigs in the world. For more than 30 years, BFGoodrich Tires has used motorsports as a proving ground. Success on the street begins with winning on the track, and BFGoodrich Tires is involved in every type of racing, including oval, road, drag, desert and extreme rock crawling. With 17 consecutive Baja 1000 wins, the winningest tire in rock-crawling history, and an unmatched record on pavement, BFGoodrich Tires has proven the only records it breaks are its own. |
