November 2, 2005Vessel's F-100 History-Making Truck Heading to the Off-Road Hall of Fame Las Vegas, NV Three decades of BFGoodrich® Tires' off-road dominance truly began with Frank "Scoop" Vessels and the Vessels F-100, with a groundbreaking Class 8 victory in the 1977 Baja 500. In honor of that victory, and the truck's pioneering efforts, Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame will showcase the Vessels F-100 in the National Automobile Museum (The Harrah's Collection) in Reno, Nevada. "We're honored to include Scoop Vessel's F-100 in Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame," said Rod Hall, president Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame. "Few trucks in the history of off-road motorsports are as revolutionary and storied as the Vessel's F-100. Scoop's truck defined what off-road vehicles were in the late 70s." The 1977 Baja 500 was a big event for Vessels. Not just because he won it, but also because it was the introduction of BFGoodrich® Radial tires to off-road racing. Vessels took part in the development of the first-generation of the BFGoodrich® Radial T/A® tire, the tire that changed the world of off-road racing. The premiere of the Radial T/A tire marked the switch from tiresoften agricultural in originthat hadn't been designed for competition, to tires designed specifically for the rigors of speed in the desert. Vessels' race truck was a race-modified short bed Ford F-100 with a spartan interiortwo racing seats and a roll cage. The race motor, a propane-powered 404 CID Ford V8, was built by a company that wanted to demonstrate how versatile propane fuel could be. The advantage was that since it was pressurized, it didn't change its density or power delivery with altitude, a big plus at Baja where the altitude ranged from 5,500 ft. to below sea level. Vessel's F-100 was recently restored and on display at the BFGoodrich booth at this year's SEMA show. The National Automobile Museum (The Harrah Collection) is located on the corner of Mill and Lake streets in downtown Reno, and is within easy walking distance from hotels and casinos. Home of more than 200 cars, the Museum covers more than 100,000 square feet featuring changing exhibits, four period street scenes and a specialty Museum Store.
