November 22, 2004BFGoodrich® Tires Clinches 19th Consecutive Baja 1000 Win; Baja T/AKR, All-Terrain T/AKO and Mud-Terrain T/AKMTires Victorious in World's Most Famous Off-Road Race La Paz, Mexico BFGoodrich® Tires claimed its 19th consecutive overall victory in the granddaddy of off-road races, the SCORE Baja 1000. With the overall victory in the four-wheel category, BFGoodrich continues to reinforce its position as the tire of choice for Baja 1000 winners and off-road enthusiasts. Troy Herbst and Larry Roeseler drove their Class 1 "truggy" to the overall four-wheel vehicle SCORE Baja 1000 victory on BFGoodrich Baja T/AKR tires. More than 280 teams entered the 37th running of the Baja 1000. Eighteen of the top 20 finishers used BFGoodrich Tires. "This was a major victory for BFGoodrich Tires and sets the stage for next year when we begin the pursuit for 20 straight wins," said Thom Peebles, brand director for BFGoodrich Tires. "Congratulations to all of the winners and to SCORE for holding one of the most challenging Baja 1000s ever." In one of the most difficult Baja 1000 races to date, competitors had to navigate a twisty 1000-mile course that was true to the Baja's reputation for rugged, rough terrain punctuated with silt beds and sharp rocks. The following is a complete list of BFGoodrich Tires 2004 SCORE Baja 1000 winners:
For only the second time in the history of the SCORE Baja 1000, multiple teams raced on the company's new 39-inch Baja T/A®KR race tire. Gus Vildosola and Rob MacCachren (Trophy
Truck), Ed & Tim Herbst (Trophy Truck), Pete Sohren (Trophy Truck) and overall four-wheel champion Troy Herbst (Class 1). The larger Baja T/AKR features a larger air chamber for greater potential shock absorption, a key element in maximizing speed and suspension performance in the larger Trophy Truck class.
For the first time, BFGoodrich Tires sponsored Wide Open Baja's Baja Challenge Class, equipping the vehicles with the All-Terrain T/AKO tire, the same tire sold to consumers through tire dealerships around the world. Racers in this class include actor and Newman-Hass race team owner Paul Newman, open-wheel racers Danny Sullivan and Roberto Guerrero, IRL star Vitor Meira, Champ Car regular Sebastian Bourdais, Michel Jourdain, Jr., Pike's Peak Hill Climb record setters Rod Millen, Rhys Millen and Jeff Zwart and Hollywood stuntman Rich Minga. In addition, BFGoodrich-sponsored UROC rock crawlers Tracy Jordan (2004 series champ) and Jason Paule drove along with Chris Jacobs, co-host of the hit TLC show Overhaulin'. This year's SCORE Baja 1000 was documented by NBC television for an upcoming special set to air on Saturday, Dec. 11 from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. (EST). With NBC's coverage, the Baja 1000 will for the first time in several years, be available to a national audience. In addition to providing its respected Baja T/AKR tire, BFGoodrich Tires provided pit and communications support to multiple teams through its fleet of off-road motorsports support vehicles.
