2004: Year of the Radial; BFGoodrich Traction T/A® Racing Radial Sets 10 Track Records In USAR Hooters ProCup
Greenville, S.C.

It only took 21.725 sec. for BFGoodrich Traction T/A® radial racing tires to leave a lasting impression on the nationally-televised USAR Hooters ProCup stock car racing series.

Clay Rogers' record-breaking lap in the season opener at USA Int'l Speedway on Feb. 26 set the stage for what many in the series have dubbed the "Year of the Radial."

There was a lot of speculation coming into the 2004 season with the introduction of newer, more advanced radial tire technology. For the first time ever, a bias-ply tire would not be used in the USAR Hooters ProCup Series with officials opting to switch to BFGoodrich Traction T/A® radial racing tires.

Critics of the new technology argued that radial tires would ruin side-by-side racing and cause more caution flags. These criticisms were quickly disproved as the Traction T/A® tire not only enhanced the quality of racing, but improved lap times and vehicle feedback for each of the teams.

"Looking back at the season, I couldn't be more pleased about what transpired," said Gene Cox, USAR president. "Not only did BFGoodrich® Tires provide the series with an excellent racing tire, they became part of the USAR Hooters ProCup Series. The engineers that traveled to all the races provided important data to every team. From the big-budget organizations to the family-run teams, they assisted with the transition to new technology which has improved the overall quality of our series."

The biggest transition was extra speed gained by the new tire. The Traction T/A® racing radial tire offers racers the perfect mix of grip and consistency. During the 2004 season, the Traction T/A® radial racing tire helped teams set 10 new track lap records.

"At the beginning of the year, I joked about offering an award for each track record that was broken," said Todd Steen, motorsports marketing manager for BFGoodrich Tires. "Looking back, I'm glad we didn't because we would have had to have a lot of trophies on hand each week!"

As part of its contingency package during the 2004 series, BFGoodrich Tires rewarded drivers that finished in the top 10 with two Traction T/A® racing radial tires. Drivers that finished 11th to 20th were awarded one free Traction T/A® racing radial tire during all 29 events.

"The tire deal really helped me throughout the year," said Mart Nesbitt, driver of the No. 92 Blue Cross Blue Shield Ford. "When you only have to buy six tires each week rather than eight, it really cuts down on your tire bill for the year."

"We are pleased with the performance of the Traction T/A® racing radial tire and this season has given us additional knowledge that will benefit us down the road," said Steen. "Radial tire technology has proven itself once again in one of racing's premier stock car racing series."
