The Guide Life:

Patagonia

A Spirit of Adventure

The raft jolts as it hits the first rapid, the icy waters of the Río Manso crashing over its sides. Sabrina Hess’s voice cuts through the roar, calm and steady, guiding her group through the churn. As the raft cascades swiftly through the white water, her eyes scan the river ahead for the next challenge, offering a glimpse into the life of a Patagonia wilderness guide.

In a nearby river, Juan Morchio moves with practiced ease, his fly rod arcing through the air before the line lands softly on the surface of a crystal-clear stream. After marching for hours upstream, his clients stand nearby, captivated not just by the promise of a catch, but by the wild, untamed beauty of Patagonia itself.

Here, in these remote landscapes, Juan and Sabrina don’t just guide — they lead others into the heart of the wilderness, where every moment is a dance with nature, and survival depends on hard-earned skills and fail-proof tools, like their off-road-ready tires.

Juan Morchio: Peace on the Water

Growing up in Viedma, a coastal city on Argentina’s eastern edge, fishing was in Juan Morchio’s net from birth. As a young boy, Juan often accompanied his father on long fishing trips at sea. The thrill of his first catch and the serene escape from city life left an indelible mark on his soul.

"Those early experiences were magical," Juan reflects. "I remember the excitement of my first catch, but more than that, I remember the feeling of being out in nature, away from the hustle and bustle."

When his family moved to Bariloche in Patagonia, teenage Juan discovered the pristine rivers and lakes that would become his lifelong sanctuary. The crystal-clear waters of Patagonia offered a new kind of fishing experience — fly-fishing — which quickly became more than just a pastime for Juan. It was a way to connect with nature on a profound level.

Guiding others in these waters is not just about teaching them to catch fish; it’s about sharing the deep, soulful connection he feels with the natural world. "I think one of my greatest joys is teaching others to fish. It’s incredibly rewarding to see someone catch their first fish and experience that same sense of wonder and excitement I felt as a child."

The Balancing Act of a Guide's Life

Juan’s wilderness lifestyle comes with a price: long days away from family, relentless Patagonian weather, and the constant pressure to keep his clients safe in an unforgiving environment. "Something that bothers me a lot is when guiding takes me away from my kids, which is the most important thing to me. I spend a lot of time out during the season, and that’s something that scares me — the time, how fast it goes."

Yet, despite the sacrifices, Juan remains committed to the path he’s chosen, drawing strength and purpose from the wild places that have shaped his life.

Sabrina Hess: Empowering Women Through Adventure

Sabrina Hess’s path to becoming a whitewater kayaking and snowboarding guide began early. At seven, she moved to Patagonia, where mountains and lakes shaped her love for nature. Soon, she was drawn to the thrill of whitewater kayaking.

Whitewater: A Test of Inner Strength

"Whitewater kayaking is more than just a sport; it’s a mirror," Sabrina reflects. "It pushes you to confront yourself. There’s no time to hesitate — everything happens too fast. It’s not for those who doubt."

Whitewater kayaking is one of the most demanding water sports, testing not just physical strength but also mental resilience. At any given moment, Sabrina is navigating rivers with rapid currents, turbulent waters, and unpredictable conditions. The adrenaline rush is undeniable, but so is the risk. For Sabrina, these challenges are what make the sport so transformative. "You can’t hide when you’re on the water," she says. "You need a positive attitude. You need to be patient, calm underwater, and you need discipline."

The physical and mental demands of these adventures are part of the draw for guides like Sabrina. Her life is a powerful journey of self-discovery, where every rapid conquest is a testament to personal strength and resilience.

Breaking Barriers Beyond the Rapids

For Sabrina, guiding is deeply personal, especially when it comes to empowering women in a male-dominated sport. "My favorite thing is guiding girls," she shares with pride. "I want to show them that we can do anything we set our minds to."

Her approach to guiding goes beyond just navigating rivers; it's about fostering environments where her clients, especially women, can break through limiting beliefs. "Even though we’ve made progress, women still face social pressures that make them feel inadequate for this sport."

"If you want something, go for it," she continues. "The secret is to have more perseverance than hope. I want to inspire people. I believe everybody can build the kind of life that they admire." For Sabrina, guiding means challenging and inspiring the next generation to push boundaries and redefine what's possible — just as she’s done for herself.

Trusting the Essentials

Wilderness guides like Sabrina and Juan know the importance of reliable equipment to ensure safety in the rough terrains of Patagonia. "This sport demands a good vehicle," Sabrina notes. "You really need to trust that your vehicle will get you back home safely. The remote and rugged places we kayak demand the best equipment, and reliable tires are essential."

Both Juan and Sabrina rely on their vehicles outfitted with BFGoodrich Tires to navigate the rugged paths to adventure, ensuring they can continue doing the work they love.

Sacrifices and Rewards

So, what does it take to guide in Patagonia? It takes courage, resilience, and a deep connection to nature. But more than anything, it takes a commitment to living a life where the lines between work and passion blur into one.

The life of a guide in Patagonia is one of contrasts. On one hand, there is the immense satisfaction of doing what you love in one of the most beautiful places on earth. On the other hand, there are the sacrifices that come with it.

Despite the time away from family and the physical demands of the job, neither Juan nor Sabrina can imagine any other life. They are drawn to the wild, to the ever-changing landscape of the mountains, and to the thrill of guiding others through it. They rely on their skills, their passion, and having the proper equipment to keep them on the road safe in such rugged environments.

In Patagonia, where the rivers run wild and the mountains stand tall, Juan and Sabrina have found their true north, guiding others to discover the same within themselves.
