Kyle Kuhnhausen:
The Self-Taught One-Man Show

A Dream Forged in a Two-Car Garage

The space is cramped. Every inch is meticulously organized. The air smells like primer and TIG welding fumes. And an undeniable ambition flickers like a warm, steady flame.

What emerges from this humble two-car garage in Creswell, Oregon, is a masterpiece that stuns the automotive world. It was here in 2018 that Kyle Kuhnhausen, a self-taught fabricator with relentless drive, turned his vision into reality. That dream? A radical machine based on a 1972 Datsun, christened “InZanity”. It defied expectations — and Kyle knew this vehicle was only the beginning of something extraordinary.

From Business School to Building Legends

At just 22 years old, Kyle Kuhnhausen made a bold decision. Fresh out of business school, he bypassed the traditional career path to chase his dream to build a car that would make waves at SEMA. Even though it was a long shot, Kyle kept betting on himself.

“I grew up with a mentor, my dad, running a business. I just thought, if you want to do something, you start a business and make it happen,” Kyle recalls. With no formal training in car building — only raw determination — he dove headfirst into the project. It would be about five years of balancing this passion project with his life as a full-time auto tech in his father’s garage.

After 5,800 hours of relentless focus, Kyle emerged with “InZanity” — a meticulously crafted 1972 Datsun 240Z running BFGoodrich G-Force Rival S tires. The car didn’t just turn heads; it won the 2018 SEMA Battle of the Builders Young Guns, securing Kyle’s place among the industry’s elite. But for Kyle, this was just the start. Each new project became an opportunity to push boundaries even further.

Crafting a Legacy, One Car at a Time

From a young age, Kyle was immersed in a world where precision and hard work were the norm. Growing up in the autobody world under his father’s guidance, Kyle honed his skills through hands-on experience, not formal training. He was taught early on that anything worth doing was worth doing well. Reflecting on his journey, Kyle shares, “I just knew internally, all I have to do is what I know I can do and then find a way to get that in front of the world.”

Kyle’s journey has always been closely intertwined with his father’s influence. From the age of 12, Kyle worked alongside his dad, learning the trade in a rigorous, hands-on environment. “I was a payrolled employee at 12 — summer break, spring break, winter break,” Kyle recalls. It would continue like this, all the way through college, when he started working full-time for his father’s company.

These experiences laid the foundation for Kyle’s incredible focus and attention to detail. His father’s influence is evident in his work ethic, but the creative vision and drive to make it a reality are entirely his own.

His Company, His Way

With a clear vision at 22, Kyle founded Kuhnhausen Metal Concepts LLC. His goal was simple yet bold: to build cars that blend artistry with engineering, creating machines that are as functional as they are breathtaking. This philosophy guided the creation of vehicles like “Ballistic Beige,” a 1964 Corvette that became a Top 3 Hotrod contender at SEMA’s 2020 Battle of the Builders. Unlike “InZanity,” which was purely Kyle’s vision brought to life, “Ballistic Beige” reflected a unique partnership between Kyle and his client — a collaboration where the client’s stylistic preferences were carefully balanced with Kyle’s pursuit of perfection.

Kyle’s father, now retired, works part-time with his son at Kuhnhausen Metal Concepts. “That’s kind of been our ultimate dream since I was a kid — to work together, but on hot rods,” Kyle shares. What began as a father teaching his son has come full circle; now, they collaborate as partners, each bringing their own strengths to the table, fulfilling a dream that’s been decades in the making.

When Creativity and Precision Collide

For Kyle, the garage is a sanctuary where creativity thrives within the confines of precision. “It’s cramped, but it’s cramped in a good way,” Kyle explains. Every tool and machine is on wheels—ready to be rolled out when needed and stowed away when not in use. Over the years, Kyle has fine-tuned this setup, maximizing efficiency in the limited space. This meticulously organized environment allows him to focus on what truly matters — building.

“All I am is a glorified problem solver,” Kyle jokes, yet his problem-solving skills are anything but ordinary. Whether it’s figuring out how to fit oversized components into a tight space or crafting intricate custom parts from scratch, Kyle’s ability to tackle challenges head-on has been central to his success.

Pushing the Limits with Every Build

“I’ll never support anything that I don’t think is the best,” Kyle says, a principle that’s driven him from the start. This commitment to quality is clear in everything he does, including his choice of tires. For him, that means using BFGoodrich tires. For his latest project, a 1966 Corvette dubbed “Serious 66,” Kyle trusts BFGoodrich tires to deliver the performance and reliability his builds demand. “I’m not a spokesman — I truly believe in this,” Kyle emphasizes.

Looking ahead, Kyle’s drive to push the limits is as strong as ever. “Serious 66” is the culmination of everything he’s learned, every challenge he’s tackled, and every dream he’s chased. This Corvette is more than just a car; it’s a gentleman’s race car, meticulously crafted to take on the streets of Southern California — and even a Porsche GT3 at the stoplight. “This car is beyond meticulous,” Kyle notes, reflecting the intense focus and dedication poured into its creation.

“I Always Bet on Myself”

While crafting award-winning cars, Kyle has proven that with enough drive and determination, anything is possible—even for a self-taught one-man show in a small-town garage. His story is one of perseverance, passion, and the relentless pursuit of excellence. His journey is a powerful reminder that true success doesn’t come from shortcuts. It comes from the willingness to put in the hard work and face every challenge head-on. Kyle’s story is proof that no matter where you start, with passion and persistence, you can create something extraordinary.

“As long as I continue on this path, I’ll get there. I’ve got faith in that process,” Kyle concludes. “I always bet on myself. That’s always done me well.”
