A Little R&R with Squirrel Concepts

On break at work in August of 2022, Adam Masters indulged in an all-too-familiar habit for car enthusiasts across the world: scrolling through the used car section of Facebook Marketplace “just to see what’s out there.” It’s a tight used vehicle market everywhere, but especially in California, where Adam co-owns Squirrel Concepts, a small auto shop in East Long Beach. So, on this random Thursday morning, he had his search radius set as high as it will go.

Did the clouds part and angels sing when he first laid eyes on Levi?

Well, he was in a tiny bathroom at the time. But they might as well have.

Levi

When you work at a shop that specializes in vintage Toyotas, you have to name the cars. It’s as fun as it is functional. You can’t just say “I left the socket set over by the 4Runner” when on any given day, there are five 4Runners at the shop. “Levi” was the name the Squirrel Concepts team chose for the blue-on-blue patinaed 1983 Longbed Toyota pickup that Adam discovered that day. The denim-hued truck was for sale in Boise, ID, listed by a man named Levi. This one pretty much named itself.

Adam pulled up Google Maps. Boise is about a 900-mile drive from Long Beach, California. A 14-hour drive. But, through some pretty cool landscapes! He washed his hands, walked out to the shop, and gathered the gang to check it out.

A few conversations with Levi-the-human later, and the team started formulating a plan. The truck itself had issues that needed addressing before it could handle a 900-mile trip through the desert. They discussed shipping it or trailering it, but in the end, landed on a plan much more fun than that.

Loading up two trucks with all the tools and supplies they’d need to get Levi up and running in Boise — including a fresh set of BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 tires — the team decided to make the purchase an adventure. They’d close the shop for a few days to camp their way up to Idaho, then they’d work on the truck in Boise to get it drivable, and finally, they’d camp their way back down to California. The round trip was almost two thousand miles. Throughout the trip, they documented their progress on Instagram stories, and their community of clients, admirers, and friends cheered them on from the comments section, eagerly awaiting each update.

“Our followers got really into it. We rebuilt the truck in the parking lot of a very sketchy motel in two days and then drove it home a thousand miles. So there was a lot of room for plot twists. One guy was like ‘I don’t know what I’m more excited for tonight: Game of Thrones or the Levi update.’ Another client from LA had beer Ubered to us at the motel to show his support. Overall, it was a great team trip.” – Adam

Taking the Long Way

Today, Levi sits in parts around the Squirrel Concepts shop as the team performs the longer, slower, and much more painstakingly-detailed version of a restorative rebuild. The kind of build that, not unlike the trip that got Levi to California in the first place, takes the long way to its destination. One that treats tasks as potential adventures. And one that polishes every bolt, even the ones that no one but the mechanic will ever see.

The long way isn’t in-and-out. It isn’t cookie-cutter. And it isn’t convenient. On the long way, you take the time to do it right, to figure things out, and to learn together as you go. It’s a patient, approachable, work-in-progress mindset — one that’s rooted in the backgrounds of the three mechanically-minded friends who own the shop together.

Meet the Squirrels

Vitecha Kochaon - Co-Owner

The Squirrel Concepts story begins with Vitecha (V for short.) Vitecha had been living overseas pursuing a passion for surfing before the pandemic landed him back in LA, living with his parents and finding himself with all the time in the world to tinker, self-teach, and reevaluate his life trajectory.

During this time, he began working in his parent’s garage on camper buildouts for the backs of his friends’ trucks. With the leftover wood from these projects, he built tiny picnic tables for the squirrels that frequented the family’s backyard. When it was time to name the outfit, Squirrel Concepts was born.

V’s Current Ride: “Wilson” is a 1994 Third-Gen Toyota pickup with a four-cylinder 22RE engine. Named after a beloved family dog, V originally picked it up to further his woodworking skills and build a camper on it for his portfolio. That work ended up being just as fulfilling a project to explore, though, and it led him to the hybrid mechanic/camper business he leads today.

Adam Masters - Co-Owner

In a past life, Adam was part of the cycling industry, selling niche high-end bikes to enthusiasts and leading bike trips as a guide. Much of what Adam learned in that space influences how Squirrel Concepts does business today — they keep all the emphasis on education and mutual excitement over a hobby, rather than on run-of-the-mill sales tactics.

Pandemic-era reflection also introduced Adam to the world of cars. “After losing a relationship during the pandemic, I drank a lot of beer in the garage and taught myself how to rebuild motors at YouTube University.”

Adam’s Current Ride: Unique because of its removable hardtop roof, Adam’s Toyota 4Runner has not yet found a good name. But a convertible 4Runner is pretty fun, especially driving around sunny LA. “I get Porsches that pass me, slow down, look over, and give me a big old nod in my hundred horsepower Toyota. It’s great.”

Mark Borland - Co-Owner

Mark was a brewer before the pandemic gave him, like his co-owner comrades, a little too much time to evaluate his life’s trajectory. During lockdowns, he bought a used Toyota pickup and found himself in need of a place to work on it.

Vitacha offered his space, and the two spent their days working on cars and documenting the process together. Soon, their DMs were full of new friends with trucks that needed work, too. Their shared garage time still felt like a hobby, but it was quickly turning into a real business.

Mark’s Ride: After road-tripping a bit too much in a Toyota Corolla, Mark knew it was time for a real truck. He drove up to Sacramento to purchase “Lady,” a first-gen 4Runner that Mark gets some crazy offers for at gas stations today.

Pressing Pause

V, Adam, and Mark all still consider themselves newcomers to the automotive space. Before they formed Squirrel Concepts two years ago, they had never worked in an auto shop and held very few preconceived notions about how a shop traditionally operates. This is, they’ve found, a much bigger strength than a weakness.

“Because we’re so new to this, we don't think the same way that everybody else does. It wasn’t too long ago that I was that kid who had a car that I was interested to learn about, but I knew nothing, so I had to take it to a shop. That bad feeling when you have to hand over the keys but don't know what’s going on and you don’t feel like you can ask — it’s ingrained in me.” – V

The team at Squirrel Concepts has eliminated that feeling from every aspect of their shop. Clients who just want to drop off their car and leave are welcome to do so, but most of the clients choose to stay while their car is there. When Squirrel Concepts performs a diagnostic, the customer is invited to sit with the mechanic while they go through the checklist, identifying potential future problems and answering any questions that may come up. Other clients choose to work on their vehicles at Squirrel Concepts, using the team as a resource if they get stuck.

On many days, the space can feel more like a shared art studio space or clubhouse than your typical auto shop.

“I'm proud of the inviting environment we've created at the shop. There’s no such thing as a ‘stupid question,’ to us. Because ultimately, we want our clients to go out with their trucks feeling confident, comfortable, and knowledgeable. Cause only at that point can you really take advantage of what your vehicle can do.” – Adam

The shop-slash-studio-slash-hangout setup has proven to be a huge draw for folks all over Southern California and sometimes the entire country who want to learn more about these vehicles. It didn’t take long for the shop to grow to a point where they reached a common crossroads on the route to success: do we hire, scale, and speed up? Or, do we press pause on new business for a while, so that we can focus on maintaining the relationships and the projects that we currently have?”

They chose option number two.

“One of the things we're really adamant about is quality over quantity. We don’t wanna blow up so fast that our clients suffer. So we decided to press pause so that we can focus on what makes us a great shop: we’re patient, we’re focused, and we’re obsessive about quality.” – Mark

The Truck as a Tool

Their community took this move to take care of themselves, their shop’s culture, and their quality work enormously well. As a result of the pause, the line to get into “Club Squirrel Concepts” is pretty long right now. But it hasn’t deterred the folks who’ve told Vitecha, Adam, and Mark to ‘please let me know as soon as you have availability.’

Will some of those folks maybe find another shop? Sure. But a lot of them won’t. Because for many Toyota enthusiasts out there, these trucks aren’t just an engine and four wheels — they’re an onramp to adventure, connection, and community. And for the clients at Squirrel Concepts, that connection starts in the shop.

“You can go to a Toyota truck meet and not say a single word about your truck, because you’re too busy bonding with other owners about all the things you do with your truck. Toyota is the common thread that helps us get out and enjoy our hobbies. We have clients that are into climbing, cycling, surfing, photography, you name it. They use their truck as a tool to get them where they really want to be.” – V

Those client passions are the team’s passions, too. And they work hard to ensure that they can each take time off to go out into the world and enjoy themselves. Recently, Adam had taken a week off to go rock climbing, Mark was leaving for a while to off-road in Death Valley with his family, and V was planning a trip to Thailand to surf and see friends.

Walking into the shop, you see these passions firsthand, looking around at all the bikes, motorcycles, surfboards, and friends’ dogs lying around. You see it too in the BFGoodrich Tires they put on so many of the shop’s builds.

“When I needed to buy tires for my first build, I did a lot of research. I looked into the best tire for ride quality, road noise, longevity, traction, and off-road reliability — it all was BFGoodrich, specifically the KO2 tire. I don't think there's a comparable tire out there that does what we need our tires to do.” – Mark

Every Lane is Memory Lane

For Squirrel Concepts and its community of passionate Toyota owners, trucks are tools for having fun and making memories. Parked on curbs and driveways across the country, our vehicles await their moment — perhaps in the quiet solitude of your break in the employee bathroom — for us to see an opportunity out in the world, to pack up our gear, and spring into adventurous action.

Even if that adventure is a thousand-mile drive through the desert just to buy another cool truck.
