Each tire category is built for a temperature range, and using one outside that range costs you either safety or tread life. All-season tires handle warm weather well and moderate winter conditions reliably. Summer tires are optimized for warm conditions and should not be used where temperatures consistently approach freezing. Winter tires are engineered for severe cold, snow, ice, and slush.

ALL-SEASON

The most popular tire on the road, built to handle “everyday” driving conditions. Its tread provides balanced dry and wet performance levels, as well as acceptable snow traction in regions with light winter weather. All-Season tires are a practical solution designed for year round usage with typically a longer tread life.

WINTER/SNOW

These tires are specifically designed to offer optimal levels of traction on ice, snow, and slush in addition to wet and dry road surfaces in severe cold weather conditions. Severe cold weather conditions are defined to occur when ambient temperatures are consistently below freezing and/or there is substantial winter precipitation. Winter tires are not intended for year round usage. All winter tires exhibit the Mountain Snowflake marking indicating suitability for winter application.

SUMMER

These tires are primarily designed for high-performance vehicles and provide optimized dry and wet performance levels in a temperate environment. Summer tires are designed for year round usage but should not be used during the winter season where temperatures are colder and approach freezing consistently as their performance would be less than optimal.

You should not. Winter compounds are soft by design so they stay flexible in the cold, and running them on warm pavement wears them rapidly and reduces the cold-weather grip you paid for. Yes, always. Fitting them on only two wheels creates a traction imbalance between axles that produces unpredictable handling in emergency braking and cornering. With winter tires only on the front, the rear can slide out. With them only on the rear, you lose front steering and braking grip. Four is the only safe configuration.

It depends on how severe your winters are. All-season tires give reliable performance in moderate winter conditions but they are not designed for severe conditions. Where temperatures sit consistently below freezing and snow or freezing rain is regular, all-season tires should be replaced with winter tires on all four positions for the season.

M+S means Mud and Snow and is based on the manufacturer's own tread geometry criteria with no standardized performance test required.
